Among the technologies that have been introduced into the realm of excavators and considered essential such as remote operations, electric power, and hydraulic coupling, grading technology is the most underrated technology. Despite the fact that this technology solves a multitude of issues, it is still more often than not overlooked by not just project managers, but also experienced operators who prefer to grade based on their experience rather than use the technology mainly because of their resistance to change.
Grading technology has become almost a standard in every class of excavators based on surveys conducted across the board which included construction equipment rental companies that provide excavators for hire. The technology is slowly creeping into other types of heavy equipment such as skid steers, dozers and motor graders as well mainly because it enables even operators with the least experience to grade as well as if not better than seasoned excavator operators in a much shorter time.
This aspect of the technology in essence eases logistics in terms of attracting experienced excavator operators as even new operators are able to grade and they also cost less and would be able to grade more accurately in less time.
Grading technology generally enhances not just the functionality of heavy machines fitted with the technology, but also enhances the productiveness of these machines and the operators. The ROI (Return on Investment) is stark and tangible due to the low cost of the technology which comes in different packages depending on the manufacturers.
For instance, a 2-Dimension grading system is easily affordable and compatible with most new excavator models available for hire. There are high end grading packages such as the full-on 3D grading system that has GPS factored into the mechanics, however, these high-end systems are costly and are generally for very high precision grading work and is not a cost-effective option for general grading work.
Most heavy equipment rental companies that offer excavators for hire these days make it a point to have the 2D grading system in the machines that they give out for rent as a standard offering. Most of these companies only own a few machines that are fitted with the 3D grading system due to the high cost and low rental frequency of rentals or demand for excavators with 3D grading capability.
Between buying a new excavator with built in grading technology, there are two other options that excavator owners may consider. The first is to upgrade their current excavators if the machine is compatible with the grade control system.
The second option is to unload the existing old model into the market (sell) and take excavators for hire on a ‘when needed basis’ which is recommended for construction companies as it is not just cost effective, but also offers a range of convenience to construction outfits.
However, the options presented here are entirely dependent on current and future business objectives and the health of the company’s cash flow.
